The volunteer crew of Aran Islands RNLI were asked to launch their all-weather lifeboat David Kirkaldy at 11.31am Monday 19 October by the Irish Coast Guard.

An elderly man on the neighbouring Island of Inis Meáin, required further medical attention. A second call out came in quick succession when a woman on Inis Mór required further medical attention and needed to be medically evacuated also.

With the patient safely aboard from Inis Mór, while observing all COVID-19 safety guidelines and under the supervision of the volunteer crew members, the lifeboat launched under Coxswain John O'Donnell and a full crew.

Weather conditions at the time of launching were moderate with poor visibility but with calm seas and a south east wind blowing force 4 to 5.

The lifeboat proceeded towards Inis Meáin, and once along side the pier, the patient was transferred safely aboard and under the supervision of the volunteer crew members, observing all COVID-19 safety guidelines.

The lifeboat then headed straight for Rossaveal harbour and the awaiting Ambulance.

Speaking after the call out Aran Islands RNLI Coxswain John O'Donnell said:

'A double call out to start the weak, the volunteer crew members train regularly to make the minutes count and get to the incident and patient as fast as possible. We would like to wish both patients a speedy recovery. Never hesitate to call 999 or 112 if you see someone in trouble and ask for the Coast Guard.'
